Connecting with Grief
Article Type: Reader Question Date: Wed, Nov 25th, 2009 What experiences can you think of that link with the above?Recently a friend was diagnosed with an incurable disease. This disease has recurring remissions but she was in the midst of a flare up. She is normally upbeat and full of the dance and sing enthusiasm that usually accompanies a much younger person. This disease left her wilted in spirit and body. For some time I didn't know how to respond because our interactions had so often been playful and full of fun as we shared our mutual enthusiasms. Suddenly my friend was bereft and for awhile I was also feeling desolate, not so much for her but for me missing the fun we used to share.. How selfish I was. Only when I realized that she was still the same person but in more need of a listener than a preacher was I able to resume conversations that were based on listening with heart and empathy. Our calls to charity often start very close to home. How we respond to the distress of friends can make or break a friendship. Responses that are truly other centered build character.
